McDowell was originally built by the Harlan Christian Church in the 1930s. A hemlock fell in 2016, destroying the cabin. The community banded together, funds were raised, and a new cabin in the same style as the original was built. The hemlock that fell was used for the board and batten on the exterior. This cabin is an open floor plan, with a private bathroom, kitchenette, and enough bunks to sleep 12 people.
